Club Background

The Victory Services Club is a one hundred year old Military Members Club with 211 bedrooms, three restaurants, bars and hospitality and extensive conference and banqueting facilities. VSC is accredited to the European Standard for Service & Business excellence, Hospitality Assured, and has been voted Services Club of the Year twice and ‘Best Places To Work in Hospitality’ (Highly Commended 2006 & now again in 2008), as well as many other leading industry awards.

Located at Marble Arch, in the very heart of London’s West End, it is superbly located and sets the standards for quality and service in the Private Club sector.

1. Why were you attracted into the industry?

I am a people person. helping customers in all the metters to me. In this Industry you get to learn about people’s cultures. Working with people is my dream job. The hotel industry is varied industry where you get to learn a lot of new things not just your own job role but from other departments too

2. What was your first job in the industry?

My first job in the industry was a receptionist at the Victory Services Club.

3. What educational qualifications do you have and/or training at work? How have these helped in your career?

I have diploma in Travel and Tourism BTEC level 2 this is how I got a job in the industry. Victory Services Club has a lot of training to help employees work effectively and improve the customer service skills.

To date I have had the following training:

  • Customer Services& 1st Impression.
  • Voice & Speech training. 
  • 5* Front of House Skills ‘’How to be an ambassador for the business’’?

4. Did you have a mentor who encouraged you during the early stages of your career?  If so, who and why were they inspirational?

All staff members of the Victory Services Club have been really helpful in my early stages, assisting in learning about the club and the receptionist role. My line manager was real inspiration to me as I always get feedback if I have done a good job or a mistake. She is always helpful no matter what. 

5. What do you regard as being your biggest achievement to date?

My Promotion from Receptionist to Senior Receptionist in the short time I have been here.

6. What industry ambitions would you still like to achieve?

I have made a big achievement in the short time I have been working for the Victory Services Club for which I am very happy. In the future I would now like to work towards becoming a Supervisor. I will work hard and commit myself for this goal.

7. What gives you a buzz about your job?

I love the fact that I am working for a charity, and I am so proud that I work in this Military Club. The club is inspiration to me as I never worked in a hotel before and here I feel like I am in the big family with very intelligent colleagues and guests.

8. Why would you recommend the industry to potential recruits?

To give a customer a great and positive experience from the moment they walk into the Club till you say goodbye is a feel good factor. There are never 2 days that are same.

9. What are your top 3 tips to people entering the industry?

  • Be knowledgeable (gain a qualification).
  • Be committed to giving the best service you can give to guests and the company you work for.
  • Let people know if you are unsure of a task before you do it 

10. Any other comments you would like to make?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Springboard organisation for supporting students and offering a great positive start for students. I would also like to recommend students to Springboard and urge them to attend Summer School; they could have the chance to change their life and kick-start their career to the dream job.
